Open Enrollment: What You Need to Know

Mayflower Medical Group October 15, 2025

Fall is a season full of things to look forward to — from cooler weather and family gatherings to Halloween and Thanksgiving celebrations. But it’s also one of the most important times of the year for your health and peace of mind: Open Enrollment. This is your once-a-year opportunity to review, renew, or make changes to your health insurance coverage. In this blog, we’ll cover the key details you need to stay informed and make the best decisions for your healthcare in the year ahead.

What is Open Enrollment?

Open Enrollment is so important because it is a limited period of time that occurs only once per year. During open enrollment, individuals and families are able to make changes to their insurance plans.

During this time, you can:

  • Enroll in a new plan
  • Renew your current coverage
  • Add or remove dependents
  • Switch to a plan that better fits your medical needs

Keep in mind that if you do miss this period to make changes and go past the deadline—you may have to wait until next year’s open enrollment. Although there are special circumstances where you’d still be able to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. These may include but are not limited to loss of coverage or experience in major life events.

Why is it important to review your plan?

Even if you have coverage and are happy with how things are, it doesn't hurt to look things over. Many people find that they could be saving so much more money or getting better care upon reviewing their plan. When you are reviewing your plan, you should ask yourself these questions,

  • Have my medical needs changed this year?
  • Do I have a new doctor or preferred clinic I want covered?
  • Are my prescriptions still included in my plan’s formulary?
  • Have my healthcare costs increased?

These general questions may lead you to answers that you’ve never thought of. You might find that small changes to your health and life can make a difference in the kind of coverage that’s right for you. The staff of Mayflower Medical Group is here to assist you along the way!

When is Open Enrollment?

For most, Open Enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7th and applies to the coverage for the following year.

How to Make the Most of Your Plan

Open enrollment can seem like a daunting task to some, but with these tips, it should make a lot of things easier.

  1. Review your current plan — Look at premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs.
  2. Compare new options — Sometimes a better plan is available for the same or lower cost.
  3. Check your provider network — Make sure your primary care doctor and preferred specialists are included.
  4. Don’t wait until the last minute — Early action helps you avoid mistakes or coverage gaps.
